HFSS – What Does It Mean?
Firstly, what is HFSS?
HFSS stands for ‘High in Fat, Salt and Sugar’, which is part of a government plan to ban HFSS volume promotions i.e. buy one, get one free, on most chocolates, sweets etc., in supermarkets, along with junk food advertising.
The legislation was going to start in October later this year but the government has now delayed the start due to the current cost of living crisis.
However, two of the major supermarkets have decided to still scrap their HFSS promotions from the original October deadline and called on the rest to follow suit.
One supermarket chief marketing officer said, “We are committed to continuing to follow the government’s original HFSS promotional timelines and call on the rest of the industry to do the same.”
Another supermarket said, “Our mission is to make our stores the easiest place to shop for a healthy, more sustainable basket – while keeping the cost of the weekly shop in check……..customers are telling us they want to eat a more healthy, sustainable diet, but without having to stretch the weekly shopping budget.”
In the meantime, confectionery manufacturers have been developing a new portfolio of non-HFSS chocolate bars in anticipation of new government regulations. One, in particular, has four new variants of their favourite selling bars – Snickers, Mars, Galaxy and Bounty.
Looks like we will still be able to pick up a tasty snack when popping to a shop with it being healthier, that can’t be a bad thing.
